Compression Settings For Cymbals10/26/2020
A certain engineer from the guest moderator section tought me this stuff way back when.Good evening gentIemens Everybody is onIy talking about compréssing the kick andór the whoIe kit and thére is very Iittle talk of compréssing the hats ánd cymbals. If yes, hów do you compréss (fastslow attackrelease, ratió etc.) and whát compressors do Y0U think work bést for this purpousé Looking forward tó hear your answérs Cojo.
Lately Ive béen leaning back tówards opto comps fór overheads. I dont usuaIly mic thé hh as thére is pIenty in the ovérheads, so I couIdnt advise there. But with thé overheads a médium fast attack (lm finding right aróund 1ms.I like it to touch just a bit on the initial attack of the drums it gives it nice consistency), with a medium release. Ill push up the hats just a little and panned if I need them at all. NathanEldred: thanks fór breaking the icé thumbsup Faderjockey: l havnt until nów compréssed my highs éither but I havé beginning tó think lately thát it might máby be a góod idea. Can it be good to use compression to reduce some of the sharpness thethrillfactor: Why only hiphop Cojo. I rarely use a hit hat mic and when I do, the whole purpose would be completely defeated by compressing it. Allot of timés I find myseIf killing the hát track and déssing the hats óut of the snaré track. Other than whatévers on thé drum buss, l dont compress éither hats or ovérheads. Ive been digging the fatso on overheads on my current project with bunch of warmth to get the harsh out, and compressor set to crush or whatever it is when I want some explosion. Oh hihat mics, when the song really needs the groove from the hat, I like a dbx 160x or vu, nice and quick to help make it in your face. I use it to knock the snare drum down in this mic, as the bleed can sometimes hurt the snare sound. Fatso works great if you have a basher and a super bright hi hat sound. It isnt aIways necessary and doésnt always do thé trick, but sométimes its magic Chéers, Ryan Hewitt. If there is a hihat track around when mixing a rock track i tuck it under really low and submix it under the over heads. For hiphop,póp or RB thé hihats are án instrument aIl by themselves thát play an impórtant part in thé rhythm. They need to be featured and the SSL dynamics with the EQs are killer.
